JasonThe first volume of This Is What I Do was a self-released CDR of long-MIA compilation tracks that Jason Lescalleet rescued from oblivion. The assignation of a volume number declared from the outset that there would likely be more, but none were forthcoming for a while. Instead, he made collaborative ventures with Aaron Dilloway, Kevin Drumm, Graham Lambkin, and a posse of video artists, released a steady stream of solo efforts for other labels, and made an out-of-the-blue concert appearance with RP Boo.
In every situation, Lescalleet employed the same set of tools: tape decks, microphones, other electronic recording and storage devices, and a wealth of found and collected audio material. His gear doesn’t limit him to a particular style…

…or sound; rather, he finds in places that run the gamut from unusual to highly familiar sounds that he can either transform or highlight. Sound itself is his medium, as something to use, and as something whose inherent or hidden powers he investigates.
Lescalleet has used it to preview provisional pieces, revive old and sold-out material, and show what an unsentimental man can do to cornball popular music when given a means to change its speed and tweak its frequencies.
Each volume feels a bit like a mix tape, with one-off experiments and larky manipulations of popular songs jostling against pieces as thoroughly worked over and worthy as anything on his LP and CD releases.
